Wooden Spoons with napkin and orzo

Why use a wooden spoon?

As the seasons change and the air gets a little cooler, I can't help but feel naustalgic for when I was a young girl spending time in the kitchen We could finally turn off the air conditioner and open the windows and doors. Our backdoor had a screen and it always let the sound of the crickets into the house. I remember vividly when it was quiet in the house, usually a teapot was starting to boil, and my mom had turned the light on over the stove. I don't know why I loved that so much, but there was a peace to it and it felt calm. She would turn the light on when she was making a stew or soup and it needed to simmer for a while. Every now and again we would have to lift the lid, grab the wooden spoon and give it a stir. To this day I think that is why I love my wooden spoons so much. Not just for their versatily, but because it brings me right back to the kitchen with the sound of the crickets and the light on the stove.

This naustalgia and love of this memory is a very large reason I wanted to have wooden spoons in the store, to go along with the "Yiayia's Kitchen"  stories.

So why do others like to use a wooden spoon so much? My guess is because they are versatile, durable and long-lasting, especially with proper care. They are lightweight and easy to handle. They comfortable to use for extended periods of time, if you are mixing something for a while. For those who cook with tomato and other acidic ingredients, they might appreciate that the wood spoons will not react with acidic foods like metal utensils can.

That was a list full of reasons I could come up with and I am sure that is why many people love them. I also wonder if others hold them dear because of a memory in the kitchen. I even had someone tell me they have passed down their spoons from one generation to another. It is so special how many memories one small little utensil can hold.

Since the wooden spoon holds such value and can often last for very long periods, it was important for me to understand how to make them last longer, especially because they are sold in the store. It's important for people to get as much use out of them as possible, for as long as possible.

After some reasearch I have found that there are some steps you can take to protect your wooden spoons and make them last longer.

1. Hand wash your wooden spoons with mild dish soap and warm water. It is important to avoid using harsh detergents or abrasive sponges as they can damage the wood. After washing, rinse the spoons well and dry them completely with a clean towel.

2. Avoid putting wooden spoons in the dishwasher. The high heat and harsh chemicals can cause the wood to crack, warp, or lose its finish. Hand washing is the best way to keep your wooden spoons in good condition.

3. Occasionally apply a food-grade mineral oil or beeswax to the spoons. This will help to protect the wood from drying out and splitting. Simply rub a small amount of oil or wax onto the spoons with a clean cloth and let it soak in overnight. Wipe away any excess before using.

4. Regularly inspect your wooden spoons for wear and tear. Look for any cracks, splinters, or rough spots that could cause injury or make the spoons less effective. If you notice any issues, stop using the spoon immediately and either sand it down or replace it.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your wooden spoons stay in great condition and continue to help you to make memories in kitchen for years to come.
